The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a fire inside the University Capitol Centre, 200 S. Capitol St., on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
Firefighters were dispatched to a report of smoke and fire coming from a refrigeration unit inside a business located in the University Capitol Center at 9:21 p.m. after the building's fire alarm system was alerted. The first units were on the scene within three minutes of being dispatched and the fire was brought under control within five minutes.
There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. The fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damages.
The Iowa City Fire Department was by the Iowa City Police Department, University of Iowa Police Department, University of Iowa Facilities Management, University of Iowa Fire Safety, the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center, and the Johnson County Ambulance Service.
Hawk Alert Update: The Iowa City Fire Department has extinguished the small fire. Resume normal activity.
Update: The building, which includes Campus Safety's dispatch center, has been evacuated please call 911 if you have an emergency.
