Jan. 13: Wind Chill Warning and Weather Safety
A Wind Wind Chill Warning is in effect for Johnson County, Iowa beginning Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. through Tuesday, Jan. 16, at noon. Wind chills as low as -40 degrees are possible during this time frame, which can cause frostbite in 10 minutes. More information.
To stay safe and protect yourself from the dangerous temperatures, the NWS recommends:
- Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
- Stay indoors during the worst part of the extreme cold.
- Keep a winter survival kit in your car if you must travel.
- Dress warmly and monitor local weather resources for updates.
If I must travel, how should I dress?
- Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing, and a hat.
- Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.
- Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.
- Stay dry and out of the wind.
- Make use of Winter Weather Safety resources.
