On Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 8:14 p.m., the University of Iowa Department of Public Safety issued a Hawk Alert to campus notifying recipients of a report of an older white male with a knife wearing a blue shirt and khaki pants in the vicinity of Catlett Residence Hall. A follow-up communication sent at 8:44 p.m. clarified the man was seen outside the main (third floor) entrance of Catlett.

UI Police responded immediately to Catlett and monitored entrances and exits of the building. Out of an abundance of caution, UI police expanded their investigation in the area to further confirm there was no threat, and area law enforcement assisted as needed. Officers were unable to locate the suspect, but ultimately determined no threats were made and no injuries occurred.

At this time, UI Police are confident that the suspect did not gain access to any student living spaces or restricted areas of the residence halls. Residence hall staff works closely with the UI Department of Public Safety, and were on hand throughout the evening.

The department would like to thank members of the UI community who reported this suspicious behavior to police. Keeping our community safe is a team effort, and we appreciate your vigilance, assistance, and sense of caring for one another.
