Yesterday evening at 10:58 p.m., the University of Iowa Police Department received a call from a student on campus who reported that he heard a loud noise that sounded like multiple gun shots outside his room in Currier Residence Hall.

UI Police responded immediately to Currier, arriving at 10:59 p.m., and quickly determined there was no indication that shots had been fired. Out of an abundance of caution, police expanded their investigation in the area to further confirm there was no threat, and additional area law enforcement continued to arrive on scene.

Amid phone calls from concerned students and parents, UI Police made the decision to send a Hawk Alert about the unsubstantiated report in an effort to explain the continued police presence on campus. A Hawk Alert was not issued after the initial call because police could not confirm the threat, knew the immediate area was safe, and that there was no danger to occupants of the building.

Due to heightened awareness of these incidents, UI Police wanted to keep campus updated as much as possible, even though there was no imminent threat.

At this time, UI Police are confident the sound reported did not come from a firearm.

The UI Police Department would like to thank the Iowa City Police Department, Coralville Police Department, University Heights Police Department, and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance and dedication to keeping our campus community safe.
