Update — Aug. 25, 12:17 p.m.

Last night at 11:29 p.m., the University of Iowa Police Department received a call from a person on campus who reported seeing a male subject carrying a gun near the pharmacy building.

Police from multiple agencies responded immediately to the area and located the subject. After further investigation, police determined the individual had been misidentified as handling a gun. No crime was committed, and no arrests were made.

The start of the semester is a good time for those on campus to re-familiarize themselves with our free safety tools, including:

  • Rave Guardian: A free mobile app that allows you send anonymous tips to UI police, schedule a guided walk home, and call UIPD with the touch of a panic button.
  • Hawk Alert: Text message is the fastest way to receive campus emergency notifications. Be sure to keep your settings up to date.
