Update: Fire response to IATL
Last week, the Iowa City Fire Department responded to two reports of a possible fire at Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories (IATL), 205 North Madison St.
An investigation by Iowa City Fire Department and the University of Iowa Fire Safety Coordinator determined that radiant heat from the sun reflecting onto the stainless-steel exterior caused the underlayment materials to smolder. A layer of drywall kept the burning materials from entering the exterior wall cavity.
The area has been covered with a nonreflective material as a temporary measure, and regular visual inspections will continue until more permanent solutions are put in place.
No injuries were reported. Foul play is not suspected, and a damage estimate is not yet available.
Update: Scene at IATL stable. Resume normal activity. Follow directions from first responders. More: http://emergency.uiowa.edu
Update: To clarify, this is an active and current Hawk Alert due to a fire at IATL. Please continue to avoid the area and follow directions of those on-scene.
