Be prepared
- Keep a set of cones, warning triangles, or emergency flares in your trunk to help alert traffic.
- Carry current insurance information in your car.
- Keep a copy of important medical information for each family member in your glove compartment.
Immediately after an accident
- Take a deep breath and stay calm.
- Check for injuries; call 911 for emergency help.
- Turn on your vehicle's hazard lights and use cones, warning triangles or flares for safety.
- Call the police, even if the accident is minor.
- Notify your insurance agent.
Other helpful tips
- Make notes about the incident.
- Take photos of the damage to all vehicles.
- If there were witnesses to the incident, get their contact information.
- Be polite, but don't declare that the accident was your fault.
- Limit your discussion of the accident to the police and your insurance agent.
- Stay at the accident scene until police have completed their report.
Accidents Involving University of Iowa Fleet Services vehicles
- Call Fleet Services at 319/384-0564 to report the accident as soon as possible. (After hours, call Public Safety at 319/335-5022).
- Accidents involving injury or death must be reported immediately to the nearest law enforcement agency and UI Department of Public Safety at 319/335-5022.
- Regent accident forms must be filed with the Fleet Services office within 48 hours of an accident.
